From Beijing to Shangai, China is a fascinating country!

Hi there!
I just got back from China and thought I would share a (short) travel log with you.
China is an amazing country and their history dates back centuries. Most of the towns we went to were 2500 years old!
To see the architecture and walls that were put in place so long ago before the times of tractors and bulldozers, that are still standing is amazing. On the modern end of the spectrum the technology in the schools and the children's dedication to learning is also astonishing. America by contrast is not yet 300 years old and has a lot of catching up to do.
I was with a group representing Columbia in a cultural exchange with our sister city of Liyang.
Of note most of the tourism in China is actually internal and there are hoards of people everywhere crowding every tourist attraction. it is nice to see that they are so interested in their country and their history.
Getting a visa is much more expensive and more of an ordeal than most other countries so if you plan to go there give yourself a couple of months to get the visa squared away. Another tip: you will be traveling 24 hours or more each way, this is draining so make sure everything you need is in your hand luggage. Get a travel consult not because you need a lot of shots but you can get advice that can prevent you getting sick on your trip: what to take, prevent blood clots, infections etc
Pictures are worth a thousand words so here goes!

New products, spring and renewal

I love the sense of renewal that spring brings!
I know that is not an original thought but it is definitely one I have every year around this time. How lucky we are to be able to witness the 4 seasons and naturally be able to feel a sense of revitalization every year.
I was in Miami at a conference last week, arriving in my boots and leather jacket to people walking around in bathing suits. Nice, but year round? Everyone has their own preferences and once upon a time I would probably have thought the non stop sunshine was ideal, but now I must admit I have come to appreciate the different seasons particularly spring.
Speaking of renewal a couple of things:
I have two new skin serums you are going to love!
One is a new Vitamin C serum with vitamin A, Co Q10, Niacinamide and Hyaluronic acid (to build collagen). The other is a Retinol serum that has 25% Vitamin C, 15% Hyaluronic acid, Jojoba, Aloe Vera and Vitamin E.  This coming week (ONLY!!!) you can try either or both products at $12 a bottle. Seriously, but this introductory price is only good until May 3rd.

My book Sex, Sanity and Sleep is now available in Spanish, exciting!!!

For those who are interested: I will also be giving 3 classes on Anti-aging at the Anne Arundel Community College in September, keep an eye out for their brochure.
I can't wait to share all the latest anti-aging and functional medicine news with you. Spoiler alert:
Joint replacements will soon go out of business because injected stem cells can regenerate tissue!
If you have chronic fatigue and other symptoms you might benefit from IV vitamins. Schedule a consult and let's talk about it.
Happy Spring! Talk with you soon :)

Roses don't put weight on you :)

Happy Valentines! Its so hard that Valentine's day comes right after all those New Year's resolutions to lose weight :(
The good news is that receiving roses doesn't put weight on you so the whole day doesn't have to be a bust.
Still, its nice to be able to navigate the other traditions of the day without gaining 5 pounds.

When did 'love' get so caught up in 'sweets'? So long as it is heart shaped you can feel loved and cared for by consuming it. ....But then there's tomorrow.

A lot of people ask me how I maintain my weight and I tell them honestly, my first rule of thumb is not to gain weight in the first place. That sounds a little trite but it is so much harder to lose weight than to gain it. Therefore, we have to take that into consideration in the first place.

I may not do all the things I preach but once I see the scale go up by 5 pounds I don't make any excuses, I adjust my activities to make sure it comes off and I can return to baseline.

I think it is easy to allow your weight to keep creeping up with a variety of excuses "it's the holidays", "It's cold outside", "when I retire/start my new job/join the gym, I will start working on my weight " and then you look around and your weight has crept up 15 pounds.

Sometimes when your weight reaches a certain level you get discouraged and think "what's the point I'm always going to be overweight!" Now, you have an excuse for not even trying. But remember rule number one is NOT to put the weight on in the first place.

A patient of mine the other day who was 199 pounds said she just didn't know what to do, so she would just do nothing. I told her that if she continued to gain when she hit 220, all of a sudden 199 would look mighty good to her!

Whatever your weight is, it is worth starting where you are.  Even if you don't lose weight but have not gained you are still ahead of where you would have been if you didn't try. So its always worth it to make the effort even when it doesn't seem like it.
Keep rule number one rolling around in your head as you take a pinch of those Valentine candies or better yet just smell the roses!
have a happy and healthy Valentines Day!

Michelle Obama's book

First let me wish you a Healthy and Happy New Year!

I am not a big reader, partly from time constraints but mainly from upbringing. I am also not big on celebrity-ism, it makes me run in the opposite direction.
Fortuately, I recieved Michelle Obama's new book "Becoming" for Christmas and I happened to be  in St. Lucia with nothing but time,  and beautiful weather.  As I endeavored to look like all the other readers stretched out on the sand I dug into my book. I am so glad I did.  This book is a masterpiece.

Michelle writes really well, the book just flows.  Most importantly it is relatable. It is authentic and very human.

I found myself relating to her story more than I could ever have imagined. Yes, she was a black woman at Princeton and I was a black woman at Harvard but it is so much more than that. Our childhoods were spent on different sides of the globe, yet I felt like she was telling my story.
I recognize a lot of the people in the book, I feel like I know them.
Likewise her experiences and tenacious determination. It is amazing how similar the human experience is all over the globe.

If you are a member of a book club that is reading "Becoming" please let me know. Or maybe we could start our own :).
If you haven't read this book yet, do so, you wont be disappointed. I give it 5 stars!
