Breast Cancer awareness, increased exercise decreases cancer incidence, free albuterol inhalers

THIS MONTH'S NEWS:

I have albuterol inhalers that will expire in 2024 (kindly donated by one of my concierge patients) and I am giving them free to anyone who needs one. Please call the office if you are interested.

October is more than just pumpkin spice lattes and cozy sweaters. It's Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to come together and fight for a cause that affects so many lives. Join us this month as we raise awareness, support survivors, and spread hope. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those impacted by breast cancer.

Whether it's sharing your own story, educating others about early detection, or participating in local events, every action counts. Help us create a world where breast cancer is no longer feared

How exercise boosts the body’s ability to

prevent cancer

Forty-five minutes of intense exercise three times a week may reduce cancer risk in patients with Lynch syndrome, a genetic condition that can lead to cancer at a young age.

This was the conclusion of a small study (just 21 people), but it builds on a vast body of evidence linking regular exercise to a decreased risk of cancer, particularly colorectal cancer. But these researchers went a step further, investigating exactly how exercise might lower cancer risk.

All 21 people in the study had Lynch syndrome, and they were divided into two groups. One was given a 12-month exercise program; the other was not. The scientists checked their cardio and respiratory fitness and tracked immune cells – natural killer cells and CD8+ T cells – in the blood and colon tissues.

People in the exercise group saw a drop in levels of the inflammatory marker prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). The drop was closely linked to the increase in immune cells. Both changes suggest a stronger immune response.

The researchers believe the changes relate to a boost in the body’s “immune surveillance” system for hunting down and clearing out cells that would otherwise become cancerous.

UPDATE ON COVID AND FLU SHOTS:

Covid boosters are not available in the office. but if you are unsure whether to get one and where I would be happy to speak with you about them. We do, however, have flu shots for all ages over 6 months.

I will be out of the office from October 9 - 21.

Please note we are no longer taking new Cigna or United patients (until further notice).
